According to multiple sources, Bogdan Bogdanovic is going to sign a three-year, $36 million deal with the Kings next month once free agency begins.
Not to be confused with the other Bojan Bogdanovic who played with Brooklyn and Washington last season, this Bogdan Bogdanovic currently plays with Fenerbahce in Turkey. He is coming off a season in which he led Fenerbahce to a Turkish League title and a EuroLeague championship. In addition, Bogdan was apart of the Serbian national team that won the silver medal in the 2016 Olympics.
Bogdan is a 6’6” shooting guard who played in 22 EuroLeague games this past season. In those games, he averaged 28 minutes, 14.6 points including 50% from the field and 43% from three point range, 3.6 assists, and 3.8 rebounds.
The Serbian, who is turning 26 this upcoming August, was originally drafted by Phoenix 27th overall in the 2014 NBA draft. His draft rights were then traded to the Kings during the 2016 draft that also brought Skal Labissiere and Georgios Papagiannis to Sacramento.
The Kings are able to risk giving a European player $36 million over three years due to how much cap space the Kings have available. The Kings are currently around $54 million with the signing of Bogdan. In addition, Bogdan is will become a restricted free agent after the three years expire, which gives the Kings a much better opportunity to keep Bogdan if they want to after the three years.
A restricted free agent means that when a player becomes a free agent, that player’s original team has the right to match any offer that any other team offers him and keep that player. In this case, the Kings can match any offer that another team offers Bogdan after his three-year contract expires and will be able to keep Bogdan.
As for now, Bogdan hopes to bring his scoring and shooting skills that made him a star at Fenerbahce and replicate those same skills here in Sacramento.
