Is This The Kings' Most Important Draft Ever?

Let's face the facts, Kings fans have not been able to trust the management to make the most sensible decisions. So it's fair for us fans to be nervous with the draft quickly approaching. The DeMarcus Cousins trade made a lot of people upset, especially with what the Kings got in return for the all-star. However the results have seemed to work out so far. Buddy Hield is an important part of the young core the Kings want to build around and the #10 pick will be a significant piece of the rebuild that the Sacramento Kings franchise is in the middle of.

With that being said, the Cousins trade is still very fresh in the minds of fans and many are still angry that the face of the Kings was traded away. This draft is a fantastic opportunity for the front office to regain the fans trust and find the new face of the franchise.

In 2010, the Kings drafted DeMarcus Cousins and Hassan Whiteside. In 2011, the Kings drafted Isaiah Thomas. All no longer with the Kings and all playing at very high levels. Since then, the only players the Kings actually drafted that are still on the team are Ben McLemore and Willie-Cauley Stein. You can tell that the way the Kings have drafted recently hasn't exactly worked out. This makes this draft even more important as Kings fans have continuously seen failed draft after failed draft and with this draft being so hyped up, it would take a lot for the Kings front office to make this draft another flub.

There is some good news, the Kings aren't exactly starting from scratch. With some draft day moves last season, the Kings acquired Georgios Papagiannis, Skal Labissiere, and Malachi Richardson. In limited time last year, all looked like solid pieces for a rebuilding team that needs somewhere to start. This is great news as it means that the two top picks for the Kings this year won't be thrown into being leaders for this team right away. Eventually the Kings would love that to happen but for now these two picks could develop right alongside the young core the Kings already have.

One other small factor is the Golden One Center. The Kings went 17-24 at home in the 1st year of the brand new arena in downtown Sacramento. With a disappointing team and no longer a must see all-star on the team, the arena is lacking a sense of can't-miss basketball. That could change with this draft as the Kings have a chance to capitalize and snag one or two future all-stars.

Let's summarize shall we? The Kings are the definition of a rebuilding team. They do have a few nice, young pieces already and have two top 10 picks in this weeks' draft along with the 34th pick overall in the 2nd round. This draft class is being deemed one of the most talented in recent history and with recent moves by the front office that have left Kings fans in a frenzy, the Sacramento Kings must capitalize on this golden opportunity to really establish a young core that could turn into something great one day and once again give the best fans in the NBA something to have faith in. Missing in this draft could set the organization back even a few years. We must wait and see, but either way, Thursday night will be a day Kings fans remember for a long, long time.
