Darren Collison has pleaded guilty to domestic battery that occurred in May at his home that involved his wife.
This occured on May 30th, 2016, when Darren Collison was arrested at his home in Granite Bay, CA, a women called authorities saying she had been assaulted and she clearly had injuries.
Collison must serve 20 days in jail, three years of probation, perform 20 hours of community service, and will need to serve a 52-week batterers’ program according to the defense attorney's office. He may serve his jail time through an alternative sentencing program if the probation department allows him to do so.
Despite this, in a recent statement Collison has shown that he will try to learn from his mistake and has held responsible for his actions. He said in a statement “Words cannot describe the feelings and regret that I have been experiencing the last few months, My family and I found ourselves in such an unfamiliar situation and it has been a difficult few months. This is far from who I am as a person and not something I am proud of. I take full responsibility for my actions. I have apologized to my beautiful wife that I have known and loved since high school. I appreciate and am thankful for the love and understanding from my family, friends and supporters. Now it is time to put this behind us and move forward."
The Sacramento Kings issued the following statement:
“Domestic violence is a serious issue across our nation and one that runs contrary to our organization’s values. We’re disappointed by Darren’s behavior and today he accepted full responsibility for his actions. He is committed to using this incident to help raise awareness through education of this critical issue in the community. We’re working with Darren and the NBA on the appropriate next steps.”
With this decision, the NBA will likely hand Collison a suspension sometime in the near future but no official announcement from the NBA has been released yet. Although it is a good sign to see Collison to take the initiative and own up to his mistakes and that he will hopefully learn from his mistake moving forward.
